Can't wait to share this piece from my health and wellness files. It turns out there's one nutrient we need to prevent the deadliest diseases and increase our longevity, and it's fiber. Now this is the recommendation of researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
The scientists analyzed nearly 250 studies and clinical trials. The result? People who ate a fiber-rich diet lowered their risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even colon cancer by up to 30%.
That's a big number. In fact, fiber lovers dramatically cut the risk of dying early from any cause. And the more fiber people ate, the lower their risk for disease. How much should we be eating?
The American Heart Association recommends getting about 30 grams of fiber every day. As far as fruit, raspberries have the most fiber, then pears and apples. Vegetables with the most fiber? That would be peas, broccoli, and one of my favorites, Brussels sprouts.
