If you’re looking for a new job, know this: Studies show that more than 70% of jobs are found through networking. So you have to make your connections with people count. And right now is the perfect time to do just that! The U.S. Department of Labor reports that December, January and February are the 3 top hiring months of the year. So getting a jump on holiday networking can pay off. You’ll have less competition, since most people put off looking for a job until January. Here are a couple of strategies to think about:
- Find someone to pass your resume along. According to Joyce Lain, author of the book Job Interviews For Dummies, one of the key trends today is finding an employee who’ll march your resume right into the hiring manager’s office. If you can ride in on the coattails of someone else, you’re much better off. So, ask around and see if anybody has a good contact you can call. Then have a group lunch to get acquainted.
- Don’t write off temp work. Temping is a great networking opportunity because you get to work at a lot of different companies. And at every one, you meet key people who can see what a valuable worker you are. Also, temp assignments often lead to full-time employment. And since most people take time off work during the holidays, you should start temping now. If you do, you just might find that Santa brings you the best gift of all this year – your dream job.
