Put aside the Gatorade and ginger ale. There’s a new drink in town that’ll rehydrate you better – and help you feel better if you’ve been sick. It’s coconut water. According to Time magazine, it’s the hottest new drink trend in North America. Last year, sales hit over $50 million in the U.S. alone. Athletes, health addicts and celebrities all swear by it. So what is it?

Well, just like you would get on a tropical beach, coconut water is the clear liquid taken from unripe coconuts. It’s sweet, refreshing and incredibly good for you. Coconut water is low in calories and fat and has a lot less sugar than most juices. It’s so good for your body that it can be used intravenously when traditional fluids aren’t available. It’s also nature’s version of Gatorade – only better.  Why? Because coconut water is loaded with potassium and minerals. In fact, one cup full of coconut milk contains more than twice as many electrolytes than most sports drinks, and more potassium than a banana. In fact, it contains the same five electrolytes found in human blood. Gatorade only has two.  

Some advocates of coconut water say it can do everything from boost your immune system to reduce menstrual cramps. So the next time you’re feeling run down, dehydrated, or you’re recovering from a bout of food poisoning - skip the ginger ale and order a coconut water!
