Did you know your vet is judging you based on your pet’s name? According to an article in USA Today by veterinarian and writer Patty Khuly, pet names are always a source of gossip around the vet’s office and they say a lot about the pet's owner. So here we go with a few common pet name types and what they say about their owners.

  • First, the human pet name. Khuly says names like Kaitlyn or Stephan can only mean one thing, the pet is a child replacement. However, not all human names raise eyebrows. Khuly says old fashioned names people don’t often use with kids anymore, like Bruno, Max, or Lucy are actually her favorite.
  • Next are the names that go in and out of fashion. Years ago it was the Star Wars names, like Leia and Luke. Lately, vets are seeing Shreks and Beyonces and even a chocolate lab named Miley Cyrus.  When your pet's name is a little too on trend, it makes vets roll their eyes. So the next time you take your Boxer named Justin Beiber to get his shots, just know the vet might be having a laugh at your expense.
  • Then there are the pets with names too crude to say. Khuly says when she comes across animals with names like that, she immediately worries the owner will take off without paying the bill.
  • Then there are the names to avoid at all costs. Vets say don't recycle names. If you had a cat named Simba that died, don't call the next cat Simba Two, because all pets are unique. It’s not healthy to get a pet as an emotional crutch.

Vets say their favorite names are the ones that are creative and cute and have an obvious meaning for the owner, like the math teacher with a cat named Algebra.
